The LiteDome®: medium
(24 x 32-inch) is our most popular soft box model due to its simplicity and
high-performance design. Originally designed almost 25 years ago, we have spent
countless hours enhancing the features of this soft box over the past two
decades. The LiteDome is the highest quality soft box on the market.
The LiteDome is
intended for use with strobe or cool lights. The material of the LiteDome is
not rated for the heat produced by continuous hot lights. New for 2009 is a
brand new product logo design. Each carry bag and logo clearly defines the size
of the soft box.
Customize to suit
your needs
The LiteDome is
designed to complement and work alongside your additional photography and
lighting equipment. The LiteDome’s recessed face allows you the freedom to add
your own custom lighting accessories, such as grids, barn doors or other dome
accessories. You can also make your own custom diffusion sheets with materials
such as Rosco Tufflux, a velum material available in rolls or individual
sheets. You can also modify the internal baffle ring by adding foam core for a
varied effect. The recessed Velcro face truly allows you the ultimate in
customization options, a feature not found on other brands.
Please note:
Strobe Connectors are sold separately.
Features and Benefits
Materials
We hold very high
standards for all the materials we use, and the LiteDome soft box fabric is no
exception. Not only does the interior need to be able to reflect light
optimally, to be color-balanced, and to prevent light from traveling through
the fabric, it needs to be able to hold up to the test of time: repeated setups
and teardowns.
After
years of development, we came up with a fabric we call DuraCloth that strikes
the perfect balance of a tight, reflective weave and flexibility for folding.
But it’s not just the fabric that makes it perform well; it’s the special
coating we apply to the fabric to ensure that it stays optimally reflective,
color neutral, UV proof, and highly durable. Other soft box fabrics simply
don’t measure up.
Removable Face &
Baffle
The LiteDome: medium
has two layers of removable diffusion to keep the light smooth and even, as
well as to prevent hot spots from showing up in reflectors. The removable face
attaches to the soft box via high-grade Velcro®. This allows you to increase
the contrast of your light for a variety of applications. The removable baffle
is suspended in the middle of the LiteDome also allowing you the option to
create soft, diffused buttery light or high contrast light. The face is about
1-stop loss. We also have new quarter
and half-stop face accessories that attach to the recessed front of the soft
box adding to your diffusion options. The recessed face has two inches of
Velcro, which allows for the addition of grids.
Baffle Clips
Our baffle clips
ensure that the internal baffle stays attached no matter how many times you
open and close the soft box. And the elastic hoops of the baffle that the clips
lock into keep the baffle taut and flat.
QRC
Our medium, large and
extra large soft boxes are designed with our patented QRC (quick-release
corners) that we developed in order to reduce the pressure on the rod so that
you could assemble and teardown the LiteDome with ease and speed. QRC was first
implemented in the LiteDome product line in 2000. QRC was designed due to the
classic problem with setting up soft boxes: the tension of the rods when
inserting into a connector can make for a difficult and frustrating experience.
QRC is designed so that when the Velcro flap at the corner of the box is opened
the pressure is reduced on the rod so that the rod can be easily removed from
the connector.
Steel-tipped Rods
Our rods are strong
and resilient--able to maintain the taut shape of a soft box, yet flexible
enough to angle easily into connectors. All rods on our soft boxes are
replaceable. This feature sounds basic, but in reality, many brands have
sewn-in rods. With sewn-in rods, if one or more rods becomes bent or broken the
soft box is more or less rendered useless, and full replacement is necessary.
With Photoflex soft boxes having replacement rods, individual rods can be replaced
at a modest charge. Some pros might even buy a couple extra rods before getting
in a jam—a trademark of a true professional planning ahead for the unforeseen
occurrences in the photography, film and video industries.
Suspension Loops
At the front corner
of the LiteDome there are little loops people have asked us “what do these
loops do?” Originally when we started building these LiteDomes a lot of people
who were in studios, were using rail systems, and those were kind of popular in
the 1980s, they’re not so popular anymore.
Many people still want to be able to hang strobes from the ceiling to
open up floor space in a studio. In fact—that’s what we’ve done at the
Photoflex studio! We have a huge LiteDome: extra large suspended above our set
all of the time, it’s there to use when the occasion arises. With the advent of
radio slave triggers for strobes, users have the ability to set off triggers
wirelessly. Without wires and cables connecting a camera to a strobe, users now
have the flexibility to move further away from their strobes, so the option of
suspending a strobe in a soft box is terrific feature. So these four loops
we’ve been building on for a long time enable you to hang your soft box from
the ceiling on lines that you can raise and lower so that you have the ability
to use the soft box without having to use a light stand.
Back Closure
When it comes to soft
boxes, any professional wants a product that produces the optimum light output.
A weak point of many soft boxes is light spill at the back of the unit. This
can greatly impact the potential of the light source. We’ve designed our back
closure with Velcro tabs to secure tightly around the light source. This keeps
the light from leaking out the back of your soft box, which does two things:
first, you lose power because you want light to go out the front and second,
you have stray light in your studio that could bounce off a wall and be
detrimental to the desired lighting affect on your set.
Identifiable
Nylon Carry Bag
Even
our carry bags have gone through revisions! There’s now a little extra room in
the width of our carry cases to allow you to get the LiteDome in and out of it
quickly and easily. The opening flap extends a few inches longer to ensure that
no stray rods make their way out of the bag, and now the outside of every bag
has a printed description of the size and make of the soft box it contains. So
if you have more than one soft box, you’ll quickly be able to identify the one
you’re after.
The
Photoflex Difference
Lighting may be the most important investment that you make in your photography
equipment. We value the integrity of our soft boxes so highly that we offer the
longest soft box warranty in the world—six years against manufacturer’s
defects. Many other manufacturers offer warranties as little as 30 days!
Photoflex
is committed to providing you with equipment that will not only last, but has
intuitive design features that will allow you greater freedom in producing and
controlling the light for your images.
NOTE: Maximum wattage for strobe modeling light is 500 watts
